Yahoo and every other place that registers domain pays for them. They don’t get them for free. I don’t know where you got that idea.
The problem with free domains is that they offer more harm than good. It is financially impossible for a company to offer free domains. Like I said, they need to pay for them, and if they offer them for free, in the long run, they will lose millions of dollars to provide a service that no one really needs.
Now, you can get a free domain if you go to sites like domain lagoon, where you have to complete offers, post on forums, refer people, etc. But I just don’t trust such sites. It would be better for you to just wait until you can buy one yourself. If you can’t wait, then well, you shouldn’t get a domain.
Please do keep in mind that even if you find one for free, you would probably have to fill in your personal information.

If you want a .com / .org / .net, or anything like that, you’ll need to pay. If you just want something easy to remember, but don’t mind what it is, there are sites that offer free domains and free subdomains.
I use:

You can tie it in with a free hosting site and get a nice looking URL, ad free. It supports URL forwarding as well as proper nameservers – so you can point it to most good web hosts.
