Can you host anywhere? Why is it so much cheaper than others like nic.com?

No, you can configure your website to use the domain you purchased or the original page’s domain.
About prices, most domains cost around $12-15 yearly, but you can find offers in companies like godaddy or yahoo that will give you a lower price.
Also you can use a free domain like .tk, .co.nr, .ya.st
I use http://dot.tk

First off, stay away from godaddy and networksolutions for domain registration and hosting needs. I have had so many customers not listen to me regarding going with them for their domains and they come back crying because they realize how bad they are. I use http://www.directnic.com/ for all of my domain and hosting purposes. They are reliable and inexpensive and you can even use their free banner ads hosting service if you register a domain with them.
Do the wise thing and stay clear of the larger registrar companies. Save yourself a lot of hassle and heartache. Trust me.

You don’t have to use their hosting, but if you’re gonna get hosting anyway, most hosts offer a free domain with their hosting plan.
I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/
Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale – $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain from them.

http://www.goldpuma.com is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you ($3.99 /month). They accept monthly payments.
But if you’re looking for the best service on the web, as an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. I run a small business and have been using 1and1 for domain names for the past 7 years.
I have used the website host inMotion Hosting for the past 3 years for my business with many hits each month and have found them to be great not only for their cheap price ($3/mo personal, $6.95 business), reliability, speed for the websites to load, and uptime.
Check out 1and1 for domains and you can also see a good objective review on inMotion Hosting as a website hosting provider below.
