Yes you have to buy a domain name for your website

You also need to setup DNS to map your new domain name to your computer’s IP address.

If you actually want people to visit your site, yes. I had a server a while back set up kinda like that and handed out the IP address to my friends and family, but if you want any broader audience than that you’ll need a domain name.

Yes, you will still have to buy a domain name.
To see if the domain name that you want is available you can go to: http://yoursiteourserver.com/hosting/
Type in the name that you are looking for and select the right termination .com, .ca, .org, etc…

Yes, you’d still require. For that I’d recommend you a few reliable domain & web hosting service providers. You can directly search the exact type of web hosting/domain services you are looking for directly by searching on http://www.webhostingchoice.com/. Here on this site they can read reviews and at the same time buy a plan on a web hosting server. Very informative web site which reviews web hosting providers.

You will need to setup the following on your ubuntu server – Apache, Mysql, PHP and other languages depending on your website programming. You will need dedicated IP for your nameservers and also your website. You will need to either host the server at home or get it colocated at a provider. However, keep in mind you will need to manage your own server if you are colocating. Most users simply look for dedicated server option because it’s simply less stress. You can look into VPS server which will give you a virtual online server at a low price – http://chimehost.com/virtual-private-servers/

Yes you do. Find a good domain registrar at http://domainnamesregistration.org

Yes.. you will still need a domain name.. (something.com – $10/yr) a sub domain (something.somethingelse.com – free) and also a DNS to point the domain or sub domain to your IP address of your ubuntu server..
If you are doing this to keep running for a while buy a webhost.. you’ll save money.. your PC will be running 24/7 using about $30/mo in electricity.. for $3.45/mo. you can buy a webhost and get a free domain name..
If you are doing this for a short term/ learning experience great.. have fun.. but may want to dump ubuntu and use something like debain, gentoo, slackware, etc… ubuntu is a bit bloated for using as a webserver..
