I purchased a domain with a web host for my business but now I am reconsidering my purchase. I don’t really understand the entire domain/web hosting thing. If i have a domain, do i need a web host? if so, why or why not? what’s the difference with having or not having a web host and how will i benefit or not benefit from paying for one? are there other options? thanks in advance!

If you do not have a host there is nowhere to keep your web pages. If you host yourself you will need to pay for a fixed internet IP address, often requiring an expensive business broadband account, and to make a lot of technical alterations to your router, and the pc, and leave the machine on 24/7.

You need the domain to reserve the name. You need th web host to store your website files online.

A domain name is simply an address to your web host. You can have both independently of each other. If you have a blog or site hosted somewhere the domain can be used to point people to an already existing site. Alternatively, if you are creating a new website or need we space to host it, you would need to have both.

The domain part is just like leasing the name for whatever time period you paid for.
Your host is where you actually store the files that makeup your webpage.
There are other things involved like DNS servers and email service etc. but that is the basics.

Keep the domain name and park it on Sedo.com.
Parking it basically give the domain name a location to point to and provides links that will generate revenue (small amounts usually).
Sedo.com also allows the domain to be listed for sale. Granted, selling a domain name and how much you may be offered or receive depends on the name. I sold a domain name for $1500 on that site. Not bad.
One last suggestion is to purchase a low cost reliable hosting account from somewhere like myhostsource.com. $5.95/month or pay a year up front and don’t worry about it for a year, you can place some sort of advertisement for your business there, or just show it for sale using a simple HTML page. You can host 3 domains on this account also, so if you want to purchase another domain name or two for your business you can host them at no additional charge. You get a lot of email accounts for each domain name to.
So you could put the domain name to work for you in some form or fashion.

As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.
They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95. You can see their Plan Details accompanied with reliable reviews regarding their service at:

There are two parts of a website:
1. A domain name like: something.com
2. A web host – a place where you’re gonna host your website
Since you already purchased a domain name I recommend either Godaddy Economy or the Deluxe plan for hosting:
http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy/
(prices from $4.74/month – $6.99/month)

the domain name allows you to put in an address : http://www.something.com
instead of an IP address.
hosting is usually rented disk space that holds your actual web files. Yes, you need both. For around $50 to $70 per year you can get both.
compare these top hosting plans:

If you are paying more than about $10 a month / $120 a year then you are probably paying too much.
